The Best Time to See the Aurora in Fairbanks

The “Aurora Season” in Fairbanks typically runs from mid-August to mid-March. While the lights are active year-round, you need total darkness and clear skies to see them. During the summer months, our “Midnight Sun” makes it too bright for viewing, but once the nights start getting longer in late August, the show begins!

Top 5 Tips for Seeing the Lights at Billie’s

  • Stay at Least 3 Nights: Statistics show that if you stay in Fairbanks for at least three nights and are active in your search, you have a 90% chance of seeing the lights.
  • Stay Up Late (or Wake Up Early): The best viewing window is usually between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM. Grab a coffee in our kitchen and stay cozy while you wait!
  • Check the Forecast: We recommend using the UAF Aurora Forecast. It’s the most accurate tool for predicting activity in our area.
  • Dress in Layers: Fairbanks winters are no joke! Make sure you have plenty of warm layers so you can enjoy the backyard view without getting cold.
  • Patience is Key: The Aurora is a natural phenomenon. It might start as a faint green glow and then suddenly dance across the entire sky. Don’t give up too early!

Experience the “Homey” Vibe

One of the best parts of staying at Billie’s is the community. You’ll often find fellow travelers in the kitchen sharing tips or heading out to the backyard together to spot the first signs of green in the sky. It’s a shared experience that makes your trip to Alaska truly unforgettable.
